Installing a deck or patio is an appealing and cost-effective way to extend your living space and make the most of your backyard. Whether you‘re gathering with friends and family or relaxing after a long day at work, you’ll enjoy having somewhere outdoors to spend your time during the spring and summer months. However, to maximize your addition’s appearance and function, it’s important to clean it properly. Incorrect cleaning products and methods can result in damage and costly repairs. Here are a few tips for keeping your investment in top shape.

How to Maintain Your Deck or Patio
  1. Sweep Often
Sweep your deck or patio regularly. This will get rid of dirt, dust, leaves, twigs, and other debris that have accumulated on the surface over time. If allowed to sit for too long, wet leaves may cause stains, and piles of debris can harbor moisture underneath, providing the ideal conditions for mold growth.

  2. Clean the Surface
A new wood deck should be professionally cleaned at about 60 days after installation. This will get rid of surface impurities that make it difficult for the sealant to penetrate the deck’s surface.

For regular cleaning of these areas, you can use water and dish soap. Spot treat stains with a stiff-bristle brush and deck cleaning solution or mixture of baking soda, dish detergent, and water. Once you’re done cleaning the area, rinse it thoroughly.

  3. Wash Off & Rearrange Furniture
It’s also important to make sure your outdoor furniture gets cleaned. Remove cushions and fabrics and place them in the washing machine according to their instructions. Wipe down the furniture with a dish soap and water solution, rinse, and leave to dry. You should rearrange your furniture once a year to avoid trapped moisture, which can lead to mold and rot.
