Home remodeling projects transform your indoor living spaces and boost the overall property value. One that is growing in popularity is bay window home additions. Not only are they gorgeous, but they are also functional, which is why so many home builders and remodelers are incorporating them into their designs. Before changing out your glass installations, though, it’s essential to understand some basics about this job.

The Different Types of Bay Windows
  1. Box Bay
These installations have a cubed design with three windowpanes covered by a box that protrudes over the home’s siding. This is an easy-to-install option because you don’t have to reposition any of the outer walls to accommodate it.

  2. Oriel Bay
Typically supported by either stone or brick, oriel bay installations are found over the entrance of your home. It’s perfect for any homeowner who fancies a Gothic-style design because it is reminiscent of mid-18th century English architecture.

  3. Bow Bay
One of the more complicated home remodeling projects, bow bays use four or more casement windows to form an arch. They can be installed on any floor of the home, and they provide more outside light while still adding a beautiful feature to the building’s exterior.

  4. Circle Bay
These are usually the largest of the bay options and are adorned with a decorative molding. Circle bays are ideal for homeowners trying to make a statement with their design because they can be crafted to be up to six feet tall and extend three feet out from the exterior wall.

The Considerations Before Installing One
  1. Panels
If you want to open and close your new bay windows, you’ll have to choose between two main options. Most use a hinged panel that allows you to open it like most casement installations, but you can also use a vertical sliding panel more common in double-hung windows.

  2. Framing
Stainless steel is an attractive, yet low-maintenance, framing choice, but if you’re looking for a more dramatic aesthetic, consider wood or metal frames. These provide a distinguished design, but they must be treated to resist weather and require ongoing maintenance to protect it.

  3. Energy Efficiency
To maximize this investment, it’s best to install higher-end glass. Double-paned glass provides better insulation, which will save you money on the monthly utility bills. Also, many options protect against UV rays, which helps maintain the quality of your indoor furniture and flooring while still allowing light into the home.
