If you are thinking about taking on a kitchen remodeling project, careful preparation is key to a smooth process. From doing research to hiring the right contractor, there are several important details to keep in mind as you plan and execute your remodel. Here are a handful of do’s and don’t to ensure a stress-free process.

Do:

Make your kitchen feel larger.

Focus on creating more space to improve the look of your kitchen and make it easier to use. Install recessed cabinets with glass doors or open shelving to increase space and open up your kitchen. Create additional floor space by buying slender barstools or installing a narrow island. Paint your kitchen walls with bright colors to make it feel more open and larger.

Include plenty of room for storage.

Storage is especially valuable in a kitchen. Install a walk-in pantry, customized drawers for utensils and cookware, swiveling spice cabinets, and roll-out trash bins to create storage space and stay organized. Install cabinets that reach your ceiling, and use the space beneath your island for additional storage.

Don’t:

Forget your budget.

Overspending on a remodel is common. Create a detailed budget that includes accurate price estimates on materials and labor. Refer back to it to make sure you’re on target, and add an extra 10% to your budget to factor in unexpected costs, such as fixing undiscovered plumbing issues.

Rush the project.

Though you may be in a rush to finish your kitchen remodeling projects so that you can begin using it, take your time. Mistakes due to haste, such as selecting flooring materials before sampling them or failing to plan enough countertop space, can be costly and could lead to a kitchen your not fully happy with and that is difficult to use.
