What Can You Expect During a Home Remodeling Project?

Here’s what you can expect while your home is being remodeled

Remodeling your home while you are living in it can be challenging. It’s best to stay elsewhere, if you can afford it, while the home remodeling is being done, but most people have to stay in their home and handle the inconvenience. Remember that once the project is complete, your beautifully renovated home will have been worth the effort. However, in the meantime, here’s what you can expect while your home is being remodeled.

What You Should Prepare for During a Home Remodeling

1. Noise

Saws, sanders, nail guns, and compressors will all add to the incessant noise you will likely experience as your home is being remodeled. If you have young children who nap during the day, consider asking a friend or family member to babysit for brief periods. Adjust your office hours if you work from home to accomplish tasks when the contractors are not on-site.

2. Dust

Dirt and dust will find its way into every room, even those not being renovated. While you can’t stop it, you can contain some of it by hanging plastic sheets over doorways leading from your construction area and over cabinet and pantry doors.

3. Breakage

Wherever there is construction or power tools, there is the potential for something to get broken. To reduce risk, ask a neighbor or friend to store valuable breakables. Remove framed art and photos from walls and glass vases or decorative items from shelves and store them in a place away from the construction.

4. No Running Water

If your kitchen or bathroom is being remodeled, you will likely be without running water at some point. Ask your contractor to give you as much notice as possible when your plumbing will be turned off so that you can plan when to use the bathroom, do laundry, or shower. Keep several gallons of water to use in case of emergency.

5. Interrupted Schedule

When your home is being renovated, privacy and schedules are interrupted daily. Most contractors start their day early, so family members will need to be up and dressed early, too. Meals, work hours, and shopping trips might have to be adjusted when your contractors will be on-site, but you’ll be glad you made an effort when your home remodeling project is complete.
