Kitchen remodeling is a great way to transform your kitchen and improve its functionality and aesthetics. Adding a kitchen island is one of the most popular additions during a remodel, thanks to its wide range of potential applications. Islands can provide extra counter space, extra storage, and even a more convenient location for a stove or sink. However, there are a few factors you need to consider when planning for an island.

Sizing
Though kitchen remodeling can address many imperfections with your current kitchen design, one area that can be more difficult to change is the amount of available floor space. You don’t want a new kitchen island to cause the room to feel cramped and uncomfortable.

Generally speaking, a kitchen island should only take up about 10 percent of the kitchen’s square footage (measuring from wall to wall). In addition, the island should have approximately three feet of clearance space between cabinets, appliances, or other features. This will ensure that the kitchen island does not prevent free movement through the room or hinder access to other areas.

How You Intend To Use It
The intended use of your kitchen island will greatly influence its design and how much additional work needs to be done during the installation. Most kitchen islands benefit from under-counter seating, which will require an extra foot of knee space under the counter-top. An open counter-top can also provide extra prep space for meals.

Many homeowners enjoy adding features such as a sink or cooktop. Keep in mind that such additions will require additional plumbing, electrical work, or even gas lines to set everything up. If you are installing a cooktop, you will also likely need a vent hood to remove smoke and steam. Be mindful of how these added costs could affect your remodeling budget.
