Extend your living space and improve the value of your home.

Deck
A deck installation is an excellent outdoor remodeling project to invest in during the summer season. Aside from providing an area for entertainment, it can extend your living space and improve the value of your home. If you’re already in the process of designing a deck, keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind.

Do:
  1. Obtain a permit.
A deck is an addition to your home, which is why it requires a building permit. This is to ensure you comply with local codes. A contractor cannot manage this project without a permit, and you could be subject to costly penalties if you don’t have one.

  2. Choose the right material.
There are a variety of options on the market. Pressure-treated lumber is the most popular due to its affordability and ease of installation, while redwood and cedar are known for their luxurious aesthetics. They are also rot- and infestation-resistant.

Don’t:
  1. Forget to consider the location.
There are several factors to consider when choosing a location for your deck. Do you want it to be easily accessible from both your home and yard? If you’re planning to use it for outdoor parties, it should be well connected to your kitchen for the easy transport of food. If you have kids, you should be able to watch them on the deck from the interior of your home.

  2. Attempt to do the work yourself.
Building a deck requires experience and skill. Attempting to do the project on your own could result in errors that delay the process and cost you more in the long run to repair. Hiring a licensed contractor will also protect you from liability if there’s property damage or an accident.
